Comprehensive Solutions for Acne Scars: Effective Treatments for Lasting Relief
Acne is the most common skin condition in the U.S. It affects an estimated 20% of the world’s population (aged 16 and older). It is also uniquely traumatic. Access Medspa Rejuvenate empathizes with the physical pain as well as the emotional toll that this condition takes on our valued patients, neighbors, and friends. Dr. Asongtia Ntonghawah and our team in Lanham, Maryland, also emphasize that acne is not just a teenager’s problem. It can develop for the first time in adulthood. Even when acne has not happened for years, scarring can haunt you. Fortunately, treatment at our office gets rid of these reminders of past pain.

Can all acne leave behind scars?
As always, the best “treatment” is prevention. We can help prevent the formation of acne scars by getting your breakouts under control. Acne treatment prescribed and performed by Dr. Ntonghawah ranges from an innovative and advanced laser treatment that actually kills the bacteria responsible for acne (the Neo by Aerolase) to facial services like HydraFacial.
How does acne cause scars?
Surgical, traumatic, chicken pox, and acne scars all generally arise in the same way. They are a response to the original injury. As the skin heals, it produces collagen. The appearance and type of scar that forms depend on the amount of collagen produced during the process. When there is insufficient collagen during the healing process of acne, a depressed scar can form, resulting in a lower area than the surrounding tissue. Conversely, when too much collagen is produced while the skin heals, it can lead to a raised scar higher than the surrounding tissue.
What are the most common types of acne scars?
Scars caused by acne tend to be depressed. As with any treatment, we need to understand the type of condition that is present. Acne scars are not only classified as depressed or raised, however. Depressed acne scars come in many different forms, too. These scars may appear as small, deep perforations (“ice pick” scars), as wide and shallow depressions (“rolling” scars), and as round- or oval-shaped pits in the skin (“boxcar” scars). Raised acne scars are more prevalent in those individuals with darker, melanin-rich skin. These scars, too, may be classified in different ways. They may be discolored and firm (“hypertrophic”), very large and thick (“keloid”), or bumps that are flesh-colored or lighter than the surrounding skin (“papular” scars).
What acne scar treatment is best for me?
That depends on the type of acne (see above) and other factors, such as how you have responded to previous treatments. Dr. Ntonghawah’s treatment for scars includes medium-depth chemical peels, microneedling (with or without radiofrequency energy or RF), laser skin resurfacing, and a carbon laser peel.
